The reason that we have this four star customer-rated Rioja as Something Special is, that it is special - despite the price. This has the classic rich, mellow, caramel oak that made Rioja famous - and it also has the strawberry and cream drinkability that the big Rioja brands lack and a very affordable price tag. You'll soon learn to ask for this by name. Superb with lamb.

You can always tell when a region is really promising by how much the land costs. Jumilla, in eastern Spain, has enjoyed rocketing prices recently. This is because it's now common knowledge that the region can produce stonking great wines. This is a sensational example.

Fruity, zesty and light but bone-dry with bright acidity, Albarino is a well-kept secret of the fishing capital of Spain, Rias Baixas. Its refreshing citrus and tropical fruit aromas are balanced neatly by mineral overtones and a good structure. You can even age them for up to three years. The Spanish say "it goes with everything, or nothing", so experiment a little and try it with Tapas, or fish, or drink it all on its own. All hail Albarino.

On a trip to Spain we discovered the amazing work of Victor Porter. With this wine you'll find the well executed combination of Spain's ancient winemaking history and Valencia's thriving modern winemaking technology. The result? Structure and complexity you'd expect to find in a Rioja Gran Reserva plus the soft fruitiness of a wine far younger in style. We very soon became addicted to this little number.

From Ribero del Duero, the same valley as Spain's most expensive wine. The smoothness of this huge Tempranillo will make your taste buds think they've been put to bed with silk sheets. Oak aged in chalk tunnels hundreds of feet underground. Pure class in a glass.

The gentle old lady of our Rioja range for those of you in need of delicate stimulation rather than a tango-moment rush. There are a few things you need to know about this wine before pressing the button. 1) it is from a fabulous year and consequently has gilt-edged fruit 2) it has been in oak for many years lending it subtle charms; and, 3) if you serve it with lamb shanks to your parents they'll look at you in a whole new light.

The key word here is 'Reserva' which means that it is made from superior grapes and only released when it is ready to drink. Made in a traditional style (very smooth, loads of caramel), this is a huge quality step up from bog standard Rioja.

Sounds odd, but we love to find bits and pieces. Special little parcels of wine locked away, sometimes forgotten, in barrels the world over. This is just such a find. A cut above the average, but no more expensive. Get it while you can.

When I first discovered Capcanes I was astonished to find that they weren't certified organic. Everything was right. Virtually no use of chemicals and a passion to produce wines as naturally as possible. I suggested that they apply for certification - so they did. But it takes time and, until they get the certificate, they still have to make a living. So here is, quite possibly, the last chance to buy this delicious, deep, complex beauty before the organic stamp goes on the label and the price goes up.
