We've been on the hunt for a top-drawer Argentinean Malbec that really over delivers for some time. To get you the best, we called on an old winemaking friend to make the magic happen. Head winemaker, Rodolfo Montenegro, at Familia Zuccardi, working with his second hand man Gustavo Martinez, has crafted something really special. A rich, full-bodied red with swathes of damson and blackcurrant fruit, perfectly integrated toasty French oak and majestically ripe tannins that deliver a silky smooth finish.
Taking the natural, rather than forced, approach means a lovely lot of tender love and care went into crafting this wine from the grape-growing heartland of Argentina - Mendonza. The Malbec grapes were delicately hand-picked and stored in plastic boxes for a fortnight in April, before classic-style vinification. Patience is needed for 20 days of maceration, with daily pigeage (punch down) and delestage (rack and return). The juice then becomes close friends with oak for 10 months.
The full-bodied wine is a dark, violet colour with brilliant purple hues shining through. You will notice typical Malbec aromas of ripe fruits like figs, plums, blackberries and marmalade. Mmmm, delicious conserves. You will also find hints of vanilla, tobacco, coffee and chocolate. The tannins are sweet and the finish is excitingly long.
Otherwise known as Malbec this fruit packed red is a future new favourite from Perez Cruz. It will be on the must have list for those of you who can't resist a succulent steak and a delicious glass of red.
A cracking single vineyard red with truly superb aromatics. Blackberry, black cherry, damson and a vanilla notes all jostle for pole position, but thankfully in a rather gentle manner. The palate is full, rich and scintillatingly well balanced.
Type: Malbec blend
The Arizu family has been making wine in Mendoza since 1901 and four generations later it's one of the few wineries in Argentina still owned by its founders! It's also now one of Argentina's leading estates, due in large part to great wines, like this Finca Los Nobles red.
