Sancho Garces Crianza Seleccion Especial Rioja 2008

Sancho Garces Crianza Seleccion Especial Rioja 2008

  • A world-class Rioja, for the price of a mediocre one.
  • Rioja - wines that would far rather give you a great big, warm hug than ask you to step outside.
  • Hand-made by people who really care.

A few years ago Patrocinio were commissioned to produce a very specific, prestigious Rioja for a well known hotel chain. Only select bunches of the best fruit, from the oldest, best situated vineyards was to be used and aged in French and American barrels from top coopers. Expensive to make and very lavish and rich in style, as requested by the client. Between its inception and release Spain has had a few issues - this wine being a casualty. But we've snapped it up and it needs a good home.

Andrew Baker talks about Sancho Garces Crianza Seleccion Especial Rioja.

"It reads Rioja Crianza on the label, but this does not begin to tell us the precision that was afforded with this wine. Only fruit from the antediluvian vineyards of Beatriz, El Hierro, Ermita and Las Coronillas was used, hand-picked almost to the berry."

Winemaker: Fernando Villamor

Winery: Beatriz, El Hierro, Ermita and Las Coronillas

Country: Spain

What can we tell you about Rioja that you don't already know? Spain pre-eminent wine region has long held the crown, producing wines that were aged both in cask and bottle, according to a rigid quality scheme, to deliver the utmost seduction. This wine was a millstone around winemaker Fernando's neck, one that we were only too happy to snap up.
