Don Diego Escolano Reserva 2007

Don Diego Escolano Reserva 2007

  • This wine will surprise slightly with its natural freshness, that will see it benefit further from cellaring.
  • It may not be from the most illustrious DO but, by golly, it makes up for it in the glass.
  • Ripe and friendly, with dusty berry fruit and a lick of coconut and vanilla from oak ageing, but the finish is just a little dry for real class Simon Woods, April 2012.

This cracking Rioja-basher is hand-picked from old, twisted bush vines that sit atop a cool 600m plateau, basking in the North Eastern Spanish sunshine. The vines come from a veritable treasure trove that can be found in the much-overlooked Carinena DO. After harvest, this blend marries for a year in quality American oak, before 3 years further maturation in bottle - no less than you'd get from a top Rioja Reserva. Expect this to show delicious maturity with soft, ripe fruit swathed in lavish oak.

Winemaker: Rafa Lopez

Winery: Carinena DO

Country: Spain

Carinena is situated in North Eastern Spain, not a million miles from the great Rioja, but never really appeared on the viticultural map. It was given to making wines for the domestic market that benefitted from high alcohol and...that's it. But now smart, boutique operators are picking up old-vines and making magnificent, well-priced gems. One to watch.

"Even though this wine has a few years under its belt it still has amazing energy and impact on the nose. Bursting out from the glass with a combination of red and black berry jabs and then calming down to a slippery, fruit-driven mid-palate, this is a really involving and thoroughly engaging wine. Modern Spanish reds are so exciting and Escolano manages to retain some European charm at the same time as feeling neatly cutting edge." - Matthew Jukes
